Dragons four weeks old

Dragon litter are 4 weeks old and had their first day out yesterday, Mum kept a close eye on them, seeing off the resident Magpie :O)  Dad and other relatives came for a visit,     Dad was not very impressed with all the little teeth, after checking their empty food bowl, just in case it needed cleaning, he took himself off to the other end of the exersice yard,  well out of harms way !

The puppies had a lot of fun exploring the new tunnels and next week will see more play equipment  and new toys  added !

Best laid plans !!

Saturday went to my daughters working bee, I felt confident leaving Mother and Pups for the day, Mum is a super Mum and as calm as they come, working bee went well and we came home after a long day checked all and everyone was fine !!!

Sunday morning, I was up and at the day early, dogs helping me plant trees, Mother dog was out in the exercise yard having a mooch around, lovely weather and all was fine with the world !!  then Mother dog started to act a little “off” didn’t put it together for a minute or two, by the time I had rung the Vet and got him moving to the surgery Mother  was staggering and her heart beat was rapid, shakes set in on the drive to the Vet’s which is only five minutes away on a Sunday, few minutes more on a week day.  Milk Fever is a nasty, insidious  and very frightening condition, frightening for both dog and owner !

Up shot was she had calcium intravenously and cool baths and ice packs to bring down the temp, we came home with the drip line in and administered calcium very slowly till we had things under control.  Learning never stops in this breed (or any other I would imagine) I have had girls who need calcium supplements after whelping, but they show mild ( I realize now that they are mild) symptoms and oral liquid calcium keeps things under control, because Mother Dog was showing no signs at all of calcium drop I had her on a maintenance dose, while I still think this is the correct way to proceed as to much calcium is as bad as not enough, it has taught me that I need to be more cautious for at least the first three weeks of puppy life, the drain on calcium from good Mum’s is a catch 22 situation, the better the milk production, the more likely that a problem could arise !!  These pups are as fat as butter and I was almost at the stage of removing Mum and restricting their intake trying to make sure that they did not develop into swimmers, well now we have no choice, Mum is only allowed very minimal feeding of the pups and we are “trying” to supplement them to reduce the drain on her for another week at least !!

Vallhunds are very much on the top end of the scale when it comes to being a great milk producing dairy cow, so say’s the Vet !!
